Congratulations on cementing your commitment to this, Henry. I know how many projects you've got going and how you must have had this itching away, needing its time. Keep checking in with it, listening to it, learning it, letting it have its voice. And I'm honoured - once again - that you've namechecked me. Grasp your dreams. x
“…and it’s quite incredible how reading one’s own work aloud can reveal a lot about the style and cadence of the writing – especially where it’s not working! After all, if I’m stumbling over the language when I read it aloud, then that’s what the reader will be experiencing too, so edits are needed.”
I did that alot in the past for my public presentations and talks. If I feel like I’m plodding through a sentence or can’t phrase delivery, then it’s not my voice.
You read so well, Henry. Looking forward to hearing the rest as it comes. If you're looking for some boost then Writers HQ has a Write November thing, and I think it's a free offering. You can read more here (and never mind the poster lady 😅): https://writershq.co.uk/write-november-2024/
Henry, for what it's worth I think your writing shows great promise. I'd concentrate on that before reading your own material. I love fantasy fiction and your writing voice is true to the genre and unique in personal style. However, the reading lacks the depth of experience. You're mimicking a somber theatrical tone and it's tedious. I say that as a 50 year veteran of radio and theater. You're not bad, you're just a beginner. You can definitely improve but please finish the novel before taking the next step. I'm anxious to read it but not to hear it. I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings. I'm still struggling with my own novel and wouldn't think of reading it aloud unless it was published first. -- Keep writing!
Thanks for the feedback Dave, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. The tone was deliberate for the prologue and other chapters are very different, but fair enough, it’s not to your taste, and I’m not a trained actor (though I am a podcaster). Always happy to learn more and the option to not listen is available.

Onward! I like this insight:

Exciting times ahead :)
I hope so! 😁
